Do you have a company car or a bus? Then your vehicle may need to have a speed limiter. This depends on the weight of your vehicle and on the date which it was take into first use. The Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) checks if the speed limiter is correctly connected and calibrated.

What is a speed limiter?

A speed limiter is a system that prevents a driver from exceeding a certain speed. In the Netherlands, some company cars and buses must be fitted with a speed limiter.

Which company cars must have a speed limiter?

The following company cars must have a 90 km/h speed limiter:

  • A diesel-engined company car with a maximum permitted weight (the weight of the vehicle itself plus the loading capacity) of over 3,500 kg to 12,000 kg, which was taken into use after 30 September 2001 and before 1 January 2005.
  • A company car with a maximum permitted weight (vehicle plus load) of more than 3,500 kg to 12,000 kg, which was taken into use after 31 December 2004.
  • A company car with a maximum permitted weight (vehicle plus load) of over 12,000 kg, which was taken into use after 31 December 1987.

Which buses must have a speed limiter?

The following buses must have a 100 km/h speed limiter:

  • A diesel bus with a maximum permitted weight (vehicle plus load) of no more than 10,000 kg, which was taken into use after 30 September 2001 and before 1 January 2005.
  • A bus with a maximum permitted weight (vehicle plus load) up to 10,000 kg, which was taken into use after 31 December 2004.
  • A bus with a maximum permitted weight (vehicle plus load) of over 10,000 kg, which was taken into use after 31 December 1987.

Fitting speed limiters

Did you fit a speed limiter in your vehicle, or did you recalibrate it? Then you must have the speed limiter inspected by RDW. To do so, please contact RDW.

Dispensation

For a number of vehicles, you can apply for an exemption from the RDW for a speed limiter. For example, for tow and recovery vehicles. You can do so with the form Aanvraag vrijstelling snelheidsbegrenzer (Application for exemption from speed limiter, in Dutch).
