If you run an association or foundation in the Netherlands that is exclusively active in public housing, you can turn it into a housing association. To do so, the Netherlands Authority for Housing Associations (Autoriteit woningcorporaties, AW) must admit you as an approved association under the Housing Act (Woningwet, in Dutch).
Housing associations must comply with certain laws and regulations (in Dutch). They must, for example, offer affordable and quality housing to people with a low income. To this end they have to keep to rules on allocation and liveability (in Dutch).
To be accepted as an housing association, you must, among others:
- submit your financial statements
- draw up an annual report
- draw up a public housing report
