Business Survey Netherlands (COEN)
Every quarter year, the Conjunctuurenquête Nederland questions entrepreneurs on topics that concern them. Topics such as turnover developments, profitability, investments, and staff. Included are questions about experiences in the past quarter and expectations for the current quarter. The business confidence survey combines various of these topics to identify an overall sentiment. It is available for the whole of the Netherlands, all business sectors, regions, and company sizes.
3rd quarter, 2024 - Business Confidence Indicator
An important composite indicator from the COEN is business confidence, which is the seasonally adjusted average of the development of and expectations about the economic climate.
Business confidence increased from -6.0 to -3.4 in the third quarter of 2024. Business confidence is relatively highest in Mining and quarrying (4.1), Transportation and storage (2.4) and Information and communication (2.0). Entrepreneurs in Agriculture, forestry and fishing (-13.2), Retail trade (not in motor vehicles) (-9.0) and Sale and repair of motor vehicles (-5.2) are relatively the most negative.
Expectations
Entrepreneurs are on balance positive about sales prices/rates (12.6%), personnel (8.0%), turnover (1.0%) and investments (0.2%). On balance, entrepreneurs are negative about the economic climate (-1.8%) and purchase orders (-0.4%).
Obstacles
35.6% of entrepreneurs experience a shortage of labour. In addition, insufficient demand (19.5%), weather conditions (8.4%), financial limitations (8.2%), shortage of production, materials, space (7.8%) or other reasons (8.4%) are obstacles as well. 34.5% experience no obstacles.
The different barriers now add up to more than 100 per cent. Entrepreneurs can enter a maximum of 2 answers for the obstacle question. Previously the total percentage was normalised to 100 %. This is now no longer done, so the percentage represents the proportion of entrepreneurs who chose this obstacle.
