What will change?
Do you have a company vehicle with a maximum authorised weight (MAM) of 2.500 kg or more? And do you use this vehicle for international transport or cabotage? Then your vehicle must be fitted with a Smart Tachograph Type 2 (SMT2) from 1 July 2026.
At the moment this only applies to vehicles with a maximum authorised weight of 3.500 kg or more.
Exemption for own transport
Is transporting goods not your main activity? For example, you are a handyman and use the vehicle to get to your customers with your materials (own transport)? Then you are not required to fit your company vehicle with a SMT2.
For whom?
- transport companies
- truck drivers
When?
This change is the result of the European Mobility Package and is expected to come into force on 1 July 2026.

Entry into force is subject to its passing through the upper and lower houses of parliament or proclamation of the Order in Council (Algemene Maatregel van Bestuur, AMvB) or ministerial decree and publication in the Staatsblad or Staatscourant (Government Gazette, in Dutch).
